Virginia Beach - Russell Eldridge Brubaker, 85, died quietly at his home on Friday morning, September 26, 2014. Born in Cambridge, MD and raised in Finksburg, MD, he graduated from Westminster High School, class of 1946. and the University of Maryland as a lieutenant in the US Army. A veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Lt. Col. Brubaker retired after serving 24 years when Russ and his wife Barbara chose to remain in Virginia Beach, VA. Their waterfront home sparked an enthusiasm for boating and he became active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a former Commodore of Flotilla 57. Seldom without a camera Russ took thousands of photographs on his many travels around the world from the pyramids of Egypt to the castles of Germany. He loved to tell stories about cars, boats, music, friends, and family. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Brubaker; his son, Michael Brubaker and daughter-in-law Charlotte Caplan of Asheville, NC; and grandson, Samuel Brubaker of Carrboro, NC. A celebration of his life will be held at the Atlantic Shores retirement community at a future date. Contact (757) 716-2000 for more information. Memorial donations in Russ's name may be made to to support the Virginia waterways that he loved.
