Russell E. Leidy, 95, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at Carroll Hospital Center.

Born March 30, 1918, in Westminster, he was the son of the late Paul and Helen Shaffer Leidy. He was the husband of Eleanor N. Leidy, his wife of 67 years, who died in 2008.

When he was a young boy, he along with his brother delivered newspapers in Westminster. Then as a young man he worked at the soda fountain in Rexall's. He was a 1935 graduate of Westminster High School.

He then worked at Westminster Shoe Factory, Congoleum, and for 33 years he worked at Sinclair Oil Company, now BP Oil Terminal, in Finksburg until his retirement. In addition, prior to retirement, he had worked for JR Brown Oil Company.

During World War II, he served in the local Minute Men along with his father. He also enjoyed landscaping for people in Carroll County for 40 years.

He was a lifetime member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, where he served as Sunday school treasurer, deacon, elder and financial secretary for 32 years and an usher for 65 years.

He was a charter member of the Westminster Rifle and Gun Club, a former member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Old Timers Baseball Club of Carroll County. He was a former member of the Westminster Municipal Band.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Peggy Leidy Chappell and Lee Chappell, of Westminster; son and daughter-in-law Donald L. and Dolores Stimax, of Hanover, Pa.; sister Helen L. "Susie" Warner, of Frizzellburg; six grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Bruce Edward Leidy, who died in 1957; brothers Paul H. Leidy and Robert L. Leidy; and sisters Mary L. Hawkins and Ruth S. Bullock.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 17 Bond St., Westminster, with his pastor, the Rev. Lucy Brady officiating and the Rev. Marty Kuchma assisting. Interment will be in Westminster Cemetery.
