Russell Luther Brown, 90, of Walkersville, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born June 28, 1923, near Johnsville, he was the son of the late Charles S. and Mollie I. Beard Brown. He was the husband of Ruby Wisner Brown, his wife of 69 years.

He served in the Army 531st Quartermaster Corps during World War II, seeing action in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and the Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Prior to the war he was employed at Glenn L. Martin of Baltimore. After the war he was a plumber and electrician with George P. Devilbiss for 18 years. In October 1965 he formed his own business, R.L. Brown Plumbing, Heating and Electrical Service, where he was a master plumber and electrician for 47 years, retiring at the end of 2012.

He was a life member of the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company, VFW Post No. 8806 of Union Bridge and FSK Post No. 11 American Legion of Frederick. He was an honorary life member of the Westminster Elks Lodge No. 2277, where he served as chaplain for 21 years and was named the 1988 Elk of the Year and received numerous other honors. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge of Frederick and for more than 50 years of the Woodsboro Dance Club Inc. He enjoyed baseball, especially the Baltimore Orioles and always enjoyed his Friday lunches out with his wife.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sisters Utie Pittinger, of Emmitsburg, and Bessie V. Young, of Woodsboro; sisters-in–law Ethel and Mildred Brown, both of Walkersville; brothers-in-law Paul R. Wisner and wife Mildred, of Frederick, and Donald E. Wisner and wife Etta Mae, of Myersville; many nieces and nephews; and a godchild, Suenne Baltzell, of Frederick.

He was predeceased by sisters Belva Barton, Hallie Hummer and Catherine Brown; and brothers Wilmer Beard, Charles A. Brown and twins George and Donald Brown.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, where an Elks Lodge memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Eric Henderson, of Harmony Church of the Brethren, officiating. Military interment will be in Rocky Hill Cemetery, near Woodsboro.
