Russell M. Bly Jr., 86, of Mount Airy, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster.

Born April 14, 1928, in Strasburg, Va., he was the son of the late Russell M. Bly Sr. and the late Eva Ella Jenkins Bly. He was the husband of the late Elenora McDonaldson Bly.

He was an engineer for B&O Railroad for 43 years. He started work on the railroad at 14 years old, shoveling coal on a steam engine.

He was an active Christian and helped start Lake Shore Baptist Church and Mount Airy Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He especially enjoyed time on his farm and with friends.

Surviving are sons Russell Bly III and wife Connie, Darrell Bly Sr. and wife Theresa, and Wendell N. Bly and wife Danita; daughter Jandell Haines and husband Michael; a sister, Molly Painter; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and friend and companion Joan Hertsch.

He was predeceased by a brother, Beverly N. Bly; sisters Treva Copp and Adelaide Coffelt; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wallace "Bud" Lusk officiating. Interment will be in Lake View Memorial Park.
