Ruth Sayler Keefer, 94, formerly of Keymar, died Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Emeritus of Westminster.
Born Feb. 10, 1918, in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Isaac W. and Emma Geiselman Sayler. She was the wife of Roy Cecil Keefer, who she married Aug. 8, 1942, in Union Bridge, and who died in 1980.
She was a June 1936 graduate of Liberty High School. She was recognized for her many contributions of volunteer time to the community. In September 2000, she was honored with a volunteer award at the 14th Annual Maryland's Most Beautiful People. She received The Rose Medallion in recognition of the highest acclaim for outstanding and continuous, dedicated service to the community while serving the Order of the Eastern Star.
In July 1998, the Union Bridge Lions Club presented her with the "Melvin Jones Award" for dedicated humanitarian service. She was a member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, Union Bridge Fire Company, Plymouth Chapter No. 41 of the Eastern Star and in July 1992 was a charter member of the Sulphur Springs Lions Club of New Windsor, later transferring to the Union Bridge Lions Club.
Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews, who are residing in many states, from Florida to Colorado to Massachusetts.
She was predeceased by nine sisters and brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, where memorial services will be held at 8:30 p.m., conducted by the Union Bridge Fire Company, followed by the Eastern Star at 8:45 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S. Main St., Union Bridge, with the Rev. Rebecca House, associate pastor, officiating. Private interment will be in Mount Union Cemetery, near Union Bridge.
