She is predeceased by her parents, William and Myrtle Townsend of Baltimore and her husband of 43 years, Robert Milton Shaw of Crownsville. She graduated from Forest Park High School in 1954. Ruth went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in English from Wilson College. She worked as a reporter for the Baltimore Sun and was a teacher and coach for The Park School in Baltimore before founding The Dog House in Potomac, Maryland in 1966. She later founded Spring Valley Camp for Dogs in Sykesville in 1970. In 1980, she co-founded with her husband, Bob, SVL, Inc., where she served as Vice President until her retirement in 2010. Ruth had a passion for renovation and improvement projects, architectural design and virtually any other type of do-it-yourself project she could imagine, whether at her home, farm or business. She volunteered her time in this respect to restoration projects at Glenelg Country School and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. She considered a trip to Home Depot time well spent. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Cure Alzheimer's Fund ( The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the dedicated staff at Sunrise Senior Living of Annapolis and Season's Hospice and Palliative Care for their support during their time with Ruth.
