Shelbia Bixler Markley, 77, of Lorien Assisted Living, Taneytown, died January 2, 2017, at her apartment. Born February 1, 1939, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, she was the only child of Kathryn (Hopkins) Bixler and Harold B. Bixler. She graduated from Western Maryland College majoring in Music Education and was an accomplished musician on organ and piano. She played for various churches as the organist and taught piano lessons. Shelbia earned her Master's Degree in Teaching Administration at Hood College. Shelbia married Reverend William Markley on August 5, 1961, at the Lutheran Seminary Chapel in Gettysburg, and have had fifty-five years of marriage. As a minister's wife, she was at the North Carroll Parish, Keysville Parish, and the Peninsula Delaware Conference. Shelbia was an elementary teacher for Carroll Country Public Schools for 28 ½ years. She taught at Elmer Wolf, Sandymount, and Westminster Elementary Schools. After retirement in 1995, she and William spent winters in their home in Sun City Center, Florida, and the remainder of the year at their home in Westminster. While at Lorien Assisted Living, she enjoyed doing Bunka, cross-stitch, and knitting. She was a member of the following organizations: Maryland State Teacher Association - NEA, Carroll Country Education Association, Door to Virtue Eastern Star, Social Order of the Beauceant, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Westminster Methodist Church, where she served as president. Surviving are her husband, Bill Markley (Lorien Assisted Living); daughter Marlinda K. Smith and son-in-law Steven of Indiana, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren: Lieutenant William Smith and wife Bailey of Annapolis, Maryland; Captain Michael Smith and wife Megan of Harker Heights, Texas; and Allison Smith, graduate student in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Shelbia has one great-granddaughter, Sawyer Smith. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 5, 2017 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 6, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Keysville Union Cemetery.
