Shirley Sjoerdtje van der Wey Elgersma, 89, of Westminster, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Lorien Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Taneytown.

She was married to William "Bill" Elgersma for 37 years before his death in 1988.

She was born March 11, 1924, in Oosterbierum, Friesland, the Netherlands, the daughter of the late Hendrik van der Wey and Reintje van der Wey-Schoelier.

She emigrated from the Netherlands with her family in June 1947, and met her future husband while her family was farming in northern New Jersey. She was employed as a governess and private cook in Goshen, N.Y., where they would marry on Oct. 20, 1950. The Elgersmas were dairy farmers in New Jersey for 22 years and then moved their operation to Westminster in 1972. She was actively involved in the family farm, but was first and foremost a homemaker, wife and mother. She was actively involved with her church family as a choir member, soloist, Sunday school teacher, and in the Ladies' Aide. She loved her church home at Frizzellburg Bible Church and her Pastor, Andrew Reisberg. Her children and grandchildren were known to be her joy and desire.

Surviving, are children and their families Franklin Elgersma and wife Virginia "Ginny," of Westminster, Renee Hernley and husband David, of Elizabethtown, Pa., and Henry "Hank" Elgersma and wife Patti, of Westminster; grandchildren Erika Long and husband Daryl, of Littlestown, Pa., Erin Arbogast and husband Ricky, of Westminster, Paul, Lauren, and John Hernley, all of Elizabethtown, Pa., William Elgersma and wife Kim, of Sterling, Va., Christina Elgersma, of Westminster, James Elgersma and wife Sara, of Xenia, Ohio, Terri, Sabrina, Mary, David, and Rita Elgersma, all of Westminster; great-grandchildren Emily and Brooklyn Long, Jeremiah, Evan, Liam, and Luke Elgersma; sisters Tina Dykstra and husband Albert, of Hudsonville, Mich., Ann Viersma and husband Wiebe, of Gettysburg, Pa., Jenny Oskam, of Taneytown; brothers Donald van der Wey and wife Martha, of Richfield Springs, N.Y., John van der Wey and wife Joan, of Hudsonville, Mich.

She was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law Raymond and Helen van der Wey; brother-in-law Pieter Oskam; and daughter-in-law Rita Elgersma.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Monday until the time of a Celebration of Her Eternal Life in Jesus Christ service at 11 a.m. at Frizzellburg Bible Church, Westminster, with Rev. Andrew Reisberg officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pa.
