Shirley M. Rose, 81, of Mount Airy, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Dove House in Westminster.

Born Jan. 13, 1931, in Watsontown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Maxwell and Pearl Bogenrief Newton. She was the wife of Herman Rose, her husband of 58 years.

She worked as a registered nurse early in her career, prior to raising her children. She was active in Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church in Ladysmith, Va., where she served as a lay person. Her church was the center of her life and she had many friends there.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Kim Rose, of Seattle; daughters Karen Quigley and husband Timothy, of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Karole Wilkes and husband Gene, of Ijamsville; grandchildren Michael Quigley, Zackary Rose, Jonathon Quigley, Trey Wilkes, Max Rose and Ashlee Wilkes; a great-granddaughter, Lillian Quigley; a brother, Earl Newton, of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Jodie Newton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Charles Tillapaugh, from Wright's Chapel, officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Highland Cemetery in New Columbia, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Wright's Chapel United Methodist Church, 8063 Ladysmith Road, Ruther Glen, VA 22546-2844; or to Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157-5629.
