Steven C. "Bo" Eckard passed away on August 24, 2016. Eckard is survived by his wife Leslie, beloved daughters Anna and Stephanie Eckard, and siblings John (Jay) Eckard, Terry Eckard, Marty Devilbiss, Lawrence (Lawry) Eckard, and Philip (Flip) Eckard, in addition to numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law, cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was the son of Doris A. and John R. Eckard, Sr. A brilliant professional musician, performer, composer and director, he served on the music faculty of McDaniel College in Westminster for more than 30 years. In addition, he taught music at Carroll Community College and Coffey Music. His charismatic teaching and generous mentoring drew students to his courses on jazz, electric bass, the history of rock and roll, world music, and music appreciation. In addition, he played in several bands including the Lost Cowboy Band, Mariachi Sin Nombres, Jogo Bonito, and the long-running, Washington, D.C. band The Essentials, which was twice named the Best Pop/Rock band by the Washington Area Music Association. As a performing musician, Eckard played venues from the Kennedy Center to the French Embassy to New York's famed rock club, CBGBs. He also served as the director of music for several years for the Carroll County Art's Council's Art in the Park. In addition to music, Eckard enjoyed Baltimore Orioles games, genealogy, and World Cup soccer. The funeral service will be private. A public memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 9 at Big Baker Chapel on the grounds of McDaniel College. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to an education fund for his children in the name of Leslie Eckard, PO Box 1548, Westminster, MD, 21158.
