Steven Lee Speak Sr., 62, of Jefferson, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at his home following his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Born Aug. 28, 1950, in Frederick, he was the son of the late Robert and Hazel Pomeroy Speak. He was the husband of Janice Elaine Longenecker Speak, his wife of 36 years.

He was a 1969 graduate of Walkersville High School. He was a member of Valley Baptist Church, Jefferson. He was a dairy farmer in Ladiesburg until 2003, then worked for Butch Martin and later for D.W. Ogg of Frederick until 2010.

He was a former member of New Midway volunteer fire company. He enjoyed handiwork, making cradles and rocking chairs for his family, visiting with family and friends and playing cards.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Steven L. Speak Jr. and wife Jennifer, of Hagerstown; Matthew R. and Eric D. Speak, both of Jefferson; brother John Speak and wife Liz, of Detour; aunts Betty Perkins, of Walkersville; Lillie Stansbury, of Yellow Springs; and Edna Stitley, of New Midway; and grandson Braeden Speak.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Valley Baptist Church, 5678 Holter Road, Jefferson, with the Rev. Larry Nelson and the Rev. Mike Knight officiating. Interment will be in Creagerstown Cemetery.
