Susan Louise "Susie" Smith, 62, of Frederick, died Thursday, July 25, 2013, at home after a long battle with cancer.

Born Sept. 25, 1950, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late William "Boodie" and Margaret Stitely Smith.

She was a 1968 graduate of Linganore High School. Following graduation she worked for several years at Sagner's of Frederick. She was then employed with J.C. Penney of Frederick for 35 years, prior to her retirement.

She was a lifelong member of Chapel Lutheran Church, near Libertytown where she sang in the choir, served on the church council and as church treasurer for several years, taught Sunday school and Bible school, was the church representative with AAL, now Thrivent, and coordinated numerous fundraisers.

She enjoyed listening to country and religious music, attending carnivals, going on bus trips and spending time with her family.

Surviving are sisters Joan V. Moxley and husband Bill, of near Libertytown, and Annie R. Harley and Mary K. Smith, both of Frederick; niece Judy Martin and husband Larry; nephews Thomas Harley and wife Kristen, and Donald Harley and wife Jennifer; great-nieces Kelsey Facemire, and Megan and Gracie Harley; great-nephews Kevin Facemire and wife Rhiannon, Curtis Facemire and wife Mary, and Joshua Harley; great-great-nephews Alec, Liam and Landon Facemire; numerous cousins; a foster sister, Joan Imes; foster niece and nephew Krissie and A.J. Alvey; friends Pat and Paul Thompson, Jan Joy, Connie and John Sloniger, Krissie Alvey, Joan Imes and Garnetta Masser; and caregivers Stephanie Michael, Jane Hamburg, Linda Philpot, Karen Dorsey, Annette Cooney, Heather Hanes and Carol Rausch.

She was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Gary Harley; grandparents William and Edna Stitely, and Thomas and Annie Smith.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chapel Lutheran Church, 11109 Daysville Road, near Libertytown, with church pastor, the Rev. Christopher Litton, officiating. Interment will be in Chapel Cemetery.
