Suzanne Lee Gunn Carr, 69, of Taylorsville, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at home after a seven-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Born Dec. 27, 1943, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles Jake Gunn Jr. and Jeanne Ruth Borton Gunn. She was the wife of Samuel J. Carr Sr., with whom she celebrated their 51st anniversary on Sept. 9.

She retired from Random House in 1999 with 25 years of service, having worked in accounts payable and inventory control. After enjoying a few years of "retirement," spending time with her family at their second home in Romney, W.Va., and vacationing in Tennessee and the Caribbean with her daughter, she began working for Carroll County Foods in 2002. She retired from their accounting department in 2007 due to the disability caused by her cancer treatments.

A lifelong lover of horses, she had been a competitive rider and avid fox hunter for many years. Later in life she enjoyed trail-riding with good friends and her granddaughters. She was a longtime member of the Taylorsville Hunt Club and served as its treasurer until her death.

She was a supporter of the Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department. For more than 20 years she worked in the pit beef stand at their annual carnival and also volunteered at many of their other fundraising events. She was an outdoor enthusiast who particularly liked vegetable and flower gardening, as well as bird and squirrel feeding and watching. She enjoyed reading, movies, films and theater. Additionally, she enjoyed country music, dancing and attending concerts with her sisters and friends.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are son Samuel J. Carr Jr. and wife Terry, of Taylorsville; daughter Shay J. Carr and companion Douglas Bauerlien, of Westminster; granddaughters Jill M. Carr, of Woodbine, Rachel N. Carr, of Winfield, and Mystic Sullivan, of McSherrystown, Pa.; a great-grandson, Donald Snyder IV, of McSherrystown; sisters Jeanne Forney and husband Allen, of Brookeville, and Patricia A. Davis, of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews.

A private service was held Monday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory in Winfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be sent to The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1710, New York, NY 10122; or The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, 901 E. St. NW, Suite 405, Washington, DC 20004.
