Sylvia Valentine Canon Haines passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones; and went to be with our Lord on August 5, 2015. Born at her family home on January 2, 1937 in Soso, Mississippi, she was the daughter of the late Stephen E. and Rubye P. Valentine. She was the wife of the late Lowell T. Haines. She was a graduate of Goucher College Class of 1958. Mrs. Haines was a life long champion and advocate for the poor and disadvantaged by fulfilling many unmet needs. Prior to retirement she served as the founding Executive Director of Human Services Programs (HSP) of Carroll County. She also served as a board member for various organizations including: Mission of Mercy, Shepherds Staff, and Access Carroll, and participated in many other social causes to help her community. She helped found Carroll County Food Sunday. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She is survived by children and spouses Laura J. and Geoffrey S. Black, Thomas E. and Corina Canon II; stepdaughter and spouse Nancy C. and David Thomsen; grandchildren Michael J. Nusbaum, Jennifer E. Gill, Nicole K. Canon, Hannah N. Canon, Thomas E. Canon III, William M. Kelch, John J. Hines, David Q. Hines; and great grandson Michael A. Nusbaum. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12 to 4pm at PRITTS FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11am at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster with Revs. Kevin and Martha Clementson officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in her name to Sylvia's Acorn Fund, c/o Community Foundation of Carroll County, 255 Clifton Blvd #203, Westminster, MD 21157 or Human Services Programs of Carroll County, P.O.
