Born March 20, 1922, in Lake Landing, Hyde County, N.C., he was the only child of the late Harold J. and Katie Marie Litchfield Ballance. He was the husband of Elsie Cox Ballance, his wife of 55 years, who died Oct. 19, 2003.

He was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in Hawaii after the invasion of Pearl Harbor, and Japan, to name a few places. He was a staff sergeant with Company E 390th Infantry.

He retired in 1980 from Springfield State Hospital Center as a licensed practical nurse with 35 years of service.

He was a member of Mount Airy Gold Start Post 191 and Four Counties VFW Post 1076 of Mount Airy. He was an honorary life member of the Westminster Elks Lodge No. 2277, where he served as Tyler for 45 years. He was a longtime volunteer at the Elks Lodge No. 2277, well-known for his fried chicken and cooking dinners on Friday nights. He was very active up until just weeks before his death.

He especially enjoyed when the whole family would get together for Saturday dinners at his home. He took pride in his fried chicken, and especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are daughter Vicki L. Deardorff and husband Roland, of Mount Airy; a daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Ballance, of Dundalk; grandchildren Bryan and Matthew Deardorff, both of Mount Airy, Steven Ballance, of Frederick, and Katie Ballance, of Dundalk; a sister-in-law, Millie Cox, of Engelhard, N.C.; brother-in-law Jimmy Cox and wife Vicky, of Belhaven, N.C.; and cousin and lifelong best friend, Vernon and wife Betty Ballance, of Engelhard.
