Thelma Blanche Lightner, 96, formerly of Westminster, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at College View Center in Frederick, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

Born Nov. 28, 1915, in Union Bridge, she was the daughter of the late Walter L. and Edna Slick Rentzel. She was the wife of W. Gerald Lightner, who died in 1996.

She was a 1933 graduate of New Windsor High School. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Manchester and a former member of the E.L.C.W. She served as the organist and choir director for the Uniontown Lutheran Parish for more than 30 years, was the pianist for the parish choir for a number of years and also taught Sunday school for many years.

She was a homemaker and, in her younger years, she was employed at Rentzel's Grocery Store in Union Bridge. She enjoyed crocheting and sold her crocheted Christmas ornaments at the Carroll County Christmas Farmer's Market.

Surviving are a daughter, Brenda L. Lightner, of Westminster; a niece; and three nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Myers; and a brother, Walter L. Rentzel Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, with the Rev. Norma Schenning officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Uniontown.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
