Thomas V. Appler II, 73, of Hampstead, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at home after a long struggle from the effects of diabetes.

Born Sept. 6, 1940, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Shirley Rose Heller and Thomas Vernon Appler.

He was a graduate of Towson State University and was an Army veteran. He was a member of Covenant of Grace Presbyterian Church. An optician, he had been owner/operator of Clark-Appler-Loeber Inc.

He enjoyed sitting on the porch of his Deep Creek Lake cabin, fishing, astronomy, ham radio, coin collecting, Bible study and watching his grandchildren.

Surviving are son John V. Appler and wife Tara, of Hampstead; daughter Anne R. Gurreri and husband Cary, of York, Pa.; a brother, Ron Appler, of Sykesville; granddaughters Gabbie Gurreri and Zoe Appler; and a grandson, Gavin Gurreri.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main St., Hampstead.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Herbert Ruby officiating. Interment will be private.
