Vernie Dorville Ashby, 90, of Westminster, Maryland died Thursday, April 21, 2016, at the Carroll Hospital. Born Nov. 5, 1925 in McHenry, KY, he was the son of the late Frances Lorene James and Vernie E. Ashby. He was the husband of the late Fonda Midkiff Ashby. Before retiring he worked for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in Guam. Upon returning from the war he obtained a Bachelor's Degree from Western Kentucky State College and later a Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Ronald G. and Carolyn J. Ashby of Westminster, brother Robert Ashby and wife Nancy, sister Priscilla Smith and husband Kenny, grandchildren Stephen Ashby, Jr. and wife Melissa, Kathleen Davis and husband Nicholas, Benjamin Ashby and wife Christina and Shaun Ashby. He is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son Stephen Ashby Sr., a brother Charles Ashby and a sister Mary Rodig. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Westminster Ridge, 505 High Acre Dr., Westminster, MD 21157. Inurnment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Association at Arrangements by Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services in Westminster.
