Victor Joseph Makovitch, 89, of Westminster passed away Wednesday October 18, 2017 at Maryland Masonic Homes after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born September 11, 1928 in Blossburg, PA to Leo and Anna (Augustine) Makowiec (original spelling), originally of Poland. He was the devoted husband of the late Anna Lee (Park) Makovitch with whom he shared a loving marriage for over 59 years. Victor attended high school in Elmira, NY where he graduated in 1947. From there he went to Western Maryland College obtaining a bachelor's in education before graduating in 1952. After graduation, he served on active duty as an officer in the Army until 1954, with service in Korea, and then with the reserves until 1965. He worked in the Carroll County School System for 32 years as a teacher, coach, referee, and administrator, serving 22 years as principal of Westminster Junior High School and West Middle School until he retired in 1988. He attended Westminster United Methodist Church and was active with the local American Legion and Elks Clubs. An accomplished football player, Victor was named a Little College All American in 1951. He was inducted into the Western Maryland College Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Throughout his life, Victor found great joy in spending time with his family at their home in Ocean City, attending the theater, gardening, entertaining, and traveling the world. Victor was one of 9 children, with all six boys serving in either World War II or Korea. Victor is survived by daughter and son-in-law Janet Lee and Matthew Baiada of Delanco, NJ, son and daughter-in-law Victor Michael Makovitch and Elizabeth Hughes of Annapolis, MD and daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth Ann and Todd Regar of Mechanicsburg, PA; sister Margaret Donahue and Theresa VanKeuren; grandchildren Megan Castro (Robert), Brian Baiada (Dianna), Jennifer and Kimberly Baiada, Max and Emma Makovitch, Derek, Jack, and Chad Regar; great grandchildren Owen and Connor Castro and Robert Maher. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 23rd at 2 p.m. at Westminster United Methodist Church, 165 E. Main St., Westminster with Rev. Malcolm Stranathan officiating. Interment will be held in Meadow Branch Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
