Virginia Mary Hooper, 89, of Taneytown, died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013.

Born Jan. 15, 1924, in Wisconsin, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Prudence Hathaway Lentz. She was the wife of the late Christian V. Nehls, whom she married in 1942; and of the late Riley E. Hooper Jr., whom she married in 1968.

She grew up living the farm life. She and her first husband moved their family to Maryland in 1955, settled on a farm in Woodsboro and raised their children. After marrying her second husband in 1968, they moved to Johnsville. When her second husband died in 2009, she moved in with her daughter, Sharon Unger and husband Jim.

She enjoyed playing cards with her children and grandchildren, and being with family and friends, enjoying the laughter and conversation around her.

Surviving are sisters Blanche Barganz, of Montello, Wis., and Pearl Uttech and husband Herb, of Sussex, Wis.; sons Walter Nehls and wife Cheryl, of Frederick, and Richard Nehls and wife Natasha, of Naples, Italy; daughters Sharon Unger and husband Jim, of Taneytown, and Sandra Linton and husband Ron, of Woodsboro; grandchildren Troy Linton and wife Cathy, Lisa Desorcy and husband Richard, Derek Nehls, Erika Orlando and husband Alessandro, Brogan Calloway and husband Asa, and Ray Fox; great-grandchildren Connor Linton and Troy Calloway; and friends Connie Brunk and Jane Lawrence.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Lentz Krueger; and brothers Lloyd Lentz and Douglas Lentz.

Private graveside services will be held at Bethany Cemetery in Taylorsville, with the Rev. Dahl Drenning officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Gilchrist Hospice Care, 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 350, Hunt Valley, MD 21031.

Arrangements are being handled by Hartzler Funeral Home in Union Bridge.
