Vivian R. Sherman, 87, of Mount Airy, died Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Lorien Life Center in Mount Airy.
Born Dec. 22, 1924, in New Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Nellie Ecker Barnes. She was the wife of Leonard "PeeWee" Sherman, who died in 1976.
She and her husband operated the Sherman Insurance Agency in Mount Airy until his death. Later she formed a partnership with Jay Gaither.
She enjoyed gardening, traveling, crafting, bowling and enjoyed small animals, especially dogs. She was a member of the Mount Airy Garden Club and belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a charter member of the American Legion Post 191 Auxiliary. During her years at Lorien, she enjoyed playing cards with a friend, Jim Luber.
Surviving are children Sandy Harshman and husband Ron, of Mount Airy, and Terry Sherman and wife Diana, of Elkin, N.C.; grandchildren Curt Harshman and wife Luz, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Jason Harshman and wife Elizabeth, of Westminster, and Sabrina Reavis and husband Nick, of Elkin; great-grandchildren Nick, Nicole, Jennifer, Kaitlyn and Tyler Harshman; and a sister, Dorothy Reed, of New Windsor.
She was predeceased by a brother, Donald Barnes.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wallace Lusk, of Locust Grove Church of the Brethren, officiating. Interment will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Mount Airy.
