Waldemar R. "Walt" Machemer

Waldemar Rudy "Walt" Machemer, 68, of Westminster, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Carroll Hospice's Dove House after a battle with multiple illnesses.

Born Feb. 22, 1945, in Landshut, Germany, he was the son of the late Karl and Katherine Nirschl Karmanow. He was the husband of Dorothy "Dottie" Dircks Machemer, his wife of 42 years, whom he married May 29, 1971.

He was raised in Lansdowne and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1963. He was employed by Sweetheart Cup in Owings Mills for more than 30 years, starting employment as a forklift operator and working his way up to warehouse manager.

He was known to be a strong-willed and positive person who was able to return to work, after a serious spinal cord injury in 1980 that left him a quadriplegic. He eventually left in 1996. He enjoyed people, watching sports, playing cards, using his computer and sporting around in his electric wheelchair.

Surviving are daughter Margie Capps and husband Donald, of Hanover, Pa.; son John McDonald and wife Kimberly, of Felton, Pa.; sisters-in-law Margaret Bishop and Barbara Buckley, both of Cumberland; grandchildren Daniel and Taylor; cousin Irene and husband Carl Stuehrenberg; and many nieces and nephews in the Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia areas.

He was predeceased by brother and sister-in-law Leo and Pauline Armentrout; and a cousin-in-law, Leroy Maphis.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Deacon Don Miller, of St. John Catholic Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Carrollton Church of God Cemetery.
