Wallace deWitt Jr., 91, of Glenwood, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at Kline House in Mount Airy.

He was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Erie, Pa. He was the husband of the late Jean C. deWitt.

He worked for the United States Geological Survey for 47 years. He retired in December 1990. He was an avid gardener and he volunteered at the Sidling Hill Exhibit Center in Hancock, for several years. He was an avid Civil War buff.

Surviving are sons Piet deWitt and wife Carole, of Pocomoke, Woody Powell and wife Susan, of Hyde, William deWitt, of Glenwood; daughters Alice deWitt, of Seymour, Tenn., Ellen Farro and husband Marshall, of Mount Airy; daughter-in-law Sandy Dutterer and husband Doug, of Mount Airy; grandchildren James Trussell of Seymour, Jeff Trussell and wife Kim, of Maryville, Tenn., Gretchen Laufer and husband Evan, and John deWitt and mother Mary Doyle, all of Eldersburg, Jack Farro and Eric Farro, both of Mount Airy, Matt deWitt and wife Melissa, of Perry Hall, Kelley Welsh and husband Doug, of Baltimore, and Carly and Cory Powell, of Hydes; great-grandchildren Dylan Trussell, of Maryville, Madison and Kaci Laufer, of Eldersburg, and Ryan and Brooke deWitt, of Perry Hall.

He was predeceased by sons Frederick Luke deWitt, Jon Bliss deWitt, and Clinton Dewey deWitt.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd., Mount Airy.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Kline Hospice House, 7000 Kimmel Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771.
