William Jerome "Jerry" Ditzel, age 81, of Finksburg, died Thursday, December 4, 2014, at the Carroll Hospital Center. Born November 26, 1933, in Baltimore City, MD he was the son of the late WIlliam Ditzel and Marguerite Thompson Ditzel. He was the husband of Betty Calp Ditzel, his wife of 58 years. Jerry had been an insurance agent for over 33 years with Prudential. He had served as a paratrooper in the United States Army from 1954-56. Jerry was an avid sports fan, especially the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family. Surviving in addition to his wife are son, Mark J. Ditzel of Hanover, MI; daughter, Gina Ditzel of Westminster; sisters, Phyllis Schaffer, Maria Eckenbarger and Delores Baker all of Bel Air and grandsons, Ryan and Christopher Swartz and Darren, Nick and Brandon Ditzel. He is also survived by four great-grandsons. He was predeceased by a son, the late Donald Ditzel. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 5 PM at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 5 PM. Interment will be private. Those desiring may make donations in Jerry's memory to the Wounded Warriors Project.
