William Robert "Willie" Atkinson, age 96, of Westminster, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at home. Born February 18, 1920, in Sykesville, MD he was the son of the late Edward T. Atkinson and Carrie E. Ridgely Atkinson. He was the husband of the late Annie Speight Atkinson who passed away in 1987. He was the devoted companion ofShirley Hughes of Sykesville for 26 years. He lived his entire life in Carroll County, MD. In 1936, he graduated from Sykesville High School. He served in the US Army as a Sergeant in the 26th Infantry Division from 1942-1945. He served at the Battle of the Bulge at Normandy. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars, European, African and Middle Eastern service ribbons and the World War II Victory ribbon. He retired as Superintendent of Maintenance from Springfield Hospital Center after 37 years. Mr. Atkinson was a former director of Sykesville Federal Savings Association now Carroll Community Bank for 36 years. He was a 60 year member of Freedom Lodge #112, A.F. & A.M; a member of Boumi Temple AAONUM, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Bee Hive Club, Western Maryland Shrine Club, life member of Elks Lodge #2277, VFW #467, charter and life member of American Legion Post #223 and University of Maryland College of Enginners. He is survived by his sister, Carrie Violet Whitehurst of Westminster, brother-in-law, Howard Humphreys; extended family Michelle and Lenny Reisberg, Stephanie and Michelle Mueller and family and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Edward Atkinson and sister Nancy Humphreys. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 20, 2016, from 3 to 5 & 7 to 9pm at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 2pm. Interment will follow in Lake View Memorial Park. Freedom Lodge will hold a masonic memorial service on Monday at 7:30pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made Flohrville United Methodist Church or Carroll Hospice.
