Zelda Grey Holcomb Mayer, 84, of Sykesville, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at Fairhaven Health Care Center in Sykesville.

Born Dec. 16, 1927, in Crichton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jesse Lee Holcomb and Carrie McClung Holcomb Kolb. She was the wife of Harry Russell Mayer, her husband of 64 years.

She was a homemaker. She was a well-known rug hooker, who enjoyed playing Scrabble and gardening.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are children David Mayer, of Fairfield, Pa., and Jackie Norris and husband George, of Libertytown; sister Peggy Bushman and husband Lee, of Ocala, Fla.; brothers-in-law C. Stanley Mayer, of Sykesville, and Robert Zeiler, of Donnellon, Fla.; step-sisters Margaret Gardner and Ruth McCullough; a nephew, Jerry Mayer; nieces Joan Mayer and Connie Schultheis; grandchildren Michael Mayer, Tim Mayer and wife Julie, Julie Holtzople and husband David Cummings, Katie Latimer and husband Danny, and Jerred Holtzople and wife Vicki; and great-grandchildren Tyler, Emily and Lauren Holtzople, Erika and Amy Latimer, Ellie and Max Cummings, and Ryan and Whitney Mayer.

She was predeceased by sisters Vonita Mayer, Uldine Zeiler, Brothers Ronald Holcomb, and Jesse "Whitey" Holcomb; a sister-in-law, Nancy Holcomb; and brothers-in-law Skip McCullough and Ed Gardner.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Chapel at Fairhaven, 7200 Third Ave., Sykesville, with the Rev. Wayne Larson, Chaplain at Fairhaven, officiating. Inurnment will be private.
