John Clayton Obituary

John Alva Clayton, 86, of Westminster, formerly of Cocoa Beach, FL, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Carroll Hospital Center. John was born on July 22, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA, and was the son of the late Alva Frederick and Nell (Rader) Clayton. John was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having enlisted in 1949, at the age 17. He was stationed in Japan in 1949, and then was sent to defend our country as a member of the 7th Infantry, 31st Regiment during the Korean War. He notably fought in the battle of the Chosin Reservoir, a decisive battle, known to this day to be one of the worst battles fought in American history. He was captured by the North Koreans and remained as a Prisoner Of War for 32 months. He was awarded the following during his military career: Korean Service Medals with 2 bronze stars, Army Occupation in Japan of WWII, Service of National Defense, and the Combat Infantry Badge. After serving 6 years in the Army he began his working career at the Baltimore City Morgue. He went on to work for WBAL Radio as a technical engineer, and press deliverer for the Carroll County Times. John collected tickets at the Carroll Theatre, a job that he loved and did "just for fun". During his retirement in the late seventies he moved to Cocoa Beach, FL, and managed a men's dormitory. After being diagnosed with cancer in 2015, John returned to Westminster, where he enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be remembered as someone who was full of life and always marched to the beat of his own drum. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion in Florida and the "Chosin Few". He enjoyed going to Army reunions, watching FOX news, and was the most dedicated Donald Trump supporter. He loved to drink cognac and play solitaire. Surviving him are cherished daughters June Romeo and Marilynne Clayton; siblings James Clayton and Rheanell Day; grandchildren Nicholas and Mia; and grand dogs Priscilla and Gracie. He was predeceased by siblings Freddy, Virginia and June. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 18, 2018 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Rd., Westminster. Funeral services will be on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will be held at a future date in Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project. P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
