Humphrey Taylor Elliott passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at Zionsville Meadows Nursing Home in Zionsville, Ind. He was born to Green Lee Elliott and Manilla Taylor Elliott on March 12, 1933 in Gilpin. Humphrey spent most of his young and adult life in Casey County and Liberty, which he referred to as the "Garden Spot of the World." He joined the U.S. Air Force and spent four years serving his country before attending Eastern Kentucky University. Humphrey was very active in the county. He was a teacher and coach at Crab Orchard, Middleburg and Liberty high schools. He was principal at Phillips Elementary School and Casey County High School. Humphrey belonged to many organizations in the county and state of Kentucky. He was a former mayor of Liberty and was a former Republican County Chairman. He was a representative at the National Republican Convention as well. He was preceded in death by his parents; an older sister, Regina Doris Elliott; and a brother-in-law, Delmer Purdy Jr. He is survived by his sister, Charleen Purdy of Jamestown, Ind.; a niece, Charla (Edward) Schoeff; a nephew, Jeff (and Kim) Purdy; great-nieces, Caryn Schoeff and Jill Purdy; and great-nephews, Josh Schoeff and Jay Purdy. He is also survived by several cousins. Friends may call at Bartle Funeral Home in Liberty on Friday, May 16 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will be held at Bartle Funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17. Burial will be at Antioch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Casey County Alumni Association, PO Box 744, Liberty, KY 42539; or to the Casey County Community and Education Center, PO Box 127, Liberty, KY 42539.
