Chao-Hsien Chu Obituary

Chao-Hsien Chu
June 22, 1951 - January 15, 2021
State College, Pennsylvania - Chao-Hsien Chu, beloved husband and father, and inspirational teacher to many, passed away on January 15, 2021. A native of Qiaotou, Taiwan, he moved to the US in 1980, earning a Ph.D. from the Smeal College of Business at Penn State University. Driven by a lifelong sense of curiosity, he has made significant contributions to research in a wide range of fields ranging from business and management to information systems and computer security to bioinformatics, with numerous publications in top-ranking journals and proceedings. As a teacher and mentor, he has touched many lives throughout his career teaching at Baruch College (City University of New York), Iowa State University, Penn State University, Singapore Management University, and Hebei University of Technology. One of the founding professors of the School of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Penn State University, he helped establish and expand a program that has grown into one of the main academic colleges at the university. Outside of academic pursuits, he was also an excellent artist and had a keen interest in photography. He also enjoyed music, and often amazed his family with his whistling. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Fang-Mei Chu, and his two daughters Karen and Emily Chu, as well as one sister and two brothers. A public memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of sending flowers, please save the funds for donation to a future memorial foundation to be established in Dr. Chu's memory. Arrangements are under the care of Koch Funeral Home, State College. Online condolences and signing of the guest book may be entered at www.kochfuneralhome.com or visit us on Facebook.

I was very sad to read of the passing of Chao-Hsien. He was one of my husband’s brightest students. My husband followed closely Chao-Hsien’s academic career. He was so very proud of Chao-Hsien’s numerous professional successes.

Chao-Hsien was kind, gentle and generous. He was our friend and he will be missed. May he rest in peace.
