Martha (Marty) Quay Laird

It is difficult to completely say all the ways that Dave was loved and appreciated by those of us who, as teenagers and young adults in the 1960's and 1970's, served on the staff of the then new Presbyterian Church camp Krislund. Some of us were kind of crazy, and Dave was not, but he seemed to welcome us and to enjoy being in our midst. There is a sign outside a church near where I live that says something to the effect that the first lesson (or maybe the first duty) of love is to listen. That was Dave Vogan to us. He listened, and smiled, and seemed genuinely interested in us, and we felt appreciated, and validated, and loved. He "ministered" to us, even when we didn't realize it.
Many years after I was a teenager, my mother, Alice Quay, became Moderator of Huntingdon Presbytery while Dave was Executive Presbyter. She is now quite advanced in age, but remembers Dave fondly, and I asked her what she remembered most about him, and she said it just seemed that he was "always there", always available to guide when it was needed. His demeanor and his presence was reassuring. Others involved with Dave in Presbytery life seem to echo that sentiment.
I count myself very fortunate to have been in his presence during those formative years of my life.

Bill, David and family members, we have truly lost a wonderful life from this world. Your father as well as your whole family had a lasting impact on my life and I'm sure countless others. Some of my best childhood memories involve the Vogan's and Presbyterian Church that your father was instrumental in shepherding to wonderful, warm and inviting place to be. One of my favorite memories comes from the fellowship breakfasts that were held in your home. Pastor Vogan was giving several of us a ride to school and a song was playing on the radio - Stuck In the Middle With You. He turned to me as I was sitting in the middle of the back seat and said the song was meant for me.
May time heal the hurt of your loss and replace it all with wonderful memories. God bless you all.
