PITTSBURGH (AP) — L.C. Greenwood, the relentless defensive end who made up one quarter of the Pittsburgh Steelers' "Steel Curtain" defense of the 1970s, has died. He was 67.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office said Greenwood died Sunday from undisclosed causes just before noon at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

A six-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Greenwood played for the Steelers from 1969-81, helping Pittsburgh win an unprecedented four Super Bowls in a six-year span. Greenwood, Joe Greene, Ernie Holmes and Dwight White formed the bedrock of the defense that helped turn a perennial loser into a dynasty.

"L.C. was one of the most beloved Steelers during the most successful period in team history and he will be missed by the entire organization," Chairman Dan Rooney said in a statement. "He will forever be remembered for what he meant to the Steelers both on and off the field."

Greenwood was taken in the 10th round of the 1969 NFL draft — nine rounds after Greene — out of Arkansas A&M (now Arkansas Pine-Bluff). He blossomed into a tenacious pass rusher who used his superior speed to blow past offensive tackles and into the backfield. Though sacks did not become an official statistic until after his retirement, Greenwood posted 73½ during his 13-year career.

Greenwood thrived in the postseason. He sacked Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach four times in the 1976 Super Bowl, a 21-17 Pittsburgh victory.

Unlike the quiet Holmes, the intimidating White and the unparalleled Greene, Greenwood was a showman. While recovering from an ankle injury during the 1973 season, Greenwood wore a pair of high top cleats that a friend painted gold. He wore them twice — both Steelers wins — and went back to his usual cleats after the ankle healed. The Steelers lost the ensuing game, and the gold cleats soon returned.

Knee problems forced Greenwood to retire before the 1982 season. His 13 years in Pittsburgh are tied for the third-longest tenure with the team in franchise history. Greenwood remained in Pittsburgh after his retirement, working as an entrepreneur and motivational speaker.

Despite support from his teammates — including Greene — Greenwood has not been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was a finalist six times, the last coming in 2006.

Most definately one of the best and dominating defensive ends in the game. Aide and was a member of the most feared front four, The Steel Curtain. L.C. you will be missed but not forgotten. I loved those gold high top cleats you wore, although worn for the ankle injury, they stood out as a fashion statement. I send my coledences to the Greenwood family. May L.C. rest in peace.

My name is Mitch Jamerson from Orange Lake, Marion County, Florida. I became a Pittsburgh Steeler fan in 1969 at 7 years old. It was Joe Greene and LC Greenwood that caught my attention to the Pittsburgh Steeler team. A few years later Mel Blount, John Stallworth, Andy Russell, Dwight White, Ernie Holmes, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Rocky Blair and Dennis "dirt" Winston was added to my favorite players. But Joe Greene, LC Greenwood and Mel Blount were exciting to watch on the Steeler Defense. When LC came out on the field with his golden shoes on for the first time, I called him "LC Hollywood". It was a style he created and as a true fan, I loved it. As a true Steeler fan, your hopes and dreams are to meet some of the "Steeler Greats" one day. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to meet LC, but the memories of him will always be with me forever. Rest in Peace LC and God Bless your entire family who has truly lost a precious loved one. With our deepest sympathy Mitch Jamerson and the Jamerson family. Orange Lake, Marion County, Florida

My sincerest sympathies to the Greenwood family, and all those who love L.C. He may not have remembered me, a small child of one of his employees at Monaloh Basin Engineers in the mid-80s, but I have the fondest memories of his kindness and generosity to our family. He and Mr. Jim McDonald were truly gentle men with hearts bigger than their bodies. I also remember as a child being absolutely awestruck at the size of his hands, and how such a large man could fit inside such a small Mercedes convertible. More than 25 years later, you continue to make an impression on me, then the shy small girl holding her fathers hand at the first company picnic. You will be missed.

For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. 2 Corinthians 5:1

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of L.C. Greenwood. I pray that the Lord will fill that empty place with his unfailing love. Growing up in the "Burgh". I became a fan of the "Stillers" having no choice but to watch football on Sundays. L.C. is definitely one name that will have to mentioned whenever anyone talks about great defensive ends. I had the opportunity to meet and tease L.C about being an old Pittsburgh Steeler I remembered watching when I was a little, little girl. He and 3 of his former teammates were traveling on a flight I was boarding while working at the airport. When I came on board this gentle giant got up out of his seat and approached me and then looking down at me, he said, "you were a little, little girl?" What a sweet guy. I laughed and had to confess that I was a teenager when I watched him play and he calmly went back to his seat.

We have lost a special guy.

To the familTo the family: While I never had the opportunity to actually meet L.C., I grew up watching he and his teammates play a game they obviously had great passion for. Someday when my son is old enough to understand, I will tell him about the greatest linemen in football history. To the family of LC. I extend my heartfelt sympathy. I met LC in 1975 and we had a 10 minute conversation of my desire to pursue a career that no women were in at that time. Everyone else laughed at me. LC asked me what plans I had made to make this career a reality. I told him, he approved and wished me God's blessings on my difficult journey. That 10 minutes he took to listen to and mentor me inspired me to take the time to listen to and mentor others. LC you have always been a giant of a man on and off the field. We will miss you here but feel comforted in knowing that you're resting in the arms of our Lord.
