Alexander Moore Melfi, Sr. Summerville - Alexander Moore Melfi, Sr., 90, husband of Hilde Hamilton Melfi, of Summerville, SC, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016. Rosary, Prayer Service and Visitation will be Monday evening, May 16, 2016, from 6-8 PM at St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church, 28 Sumter Avenue, Summerville, South Carolina. The Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 11 AM at the Church. The rite of committal will take place at Summerville (Parks) Cemetery, followed by reception at Madden Hall. In lieu of flowers you may make donations to Meals OnWheels or to your favorite charity. Mr. Melfi was born December 7, 1925 in Summerville, SC, a son of the late Joseph F. Melfi, Sr. and the late Jeanette Veronica Moore Melfi. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII (Aviation Radio Man). He was a football player for Summerville High, attended the Citadel for a year, worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company as a compass man, South Carolina Highway Department as a Roadman to Inspector, Dorchester Plumbing Company, Coastal Butane Gas Corporation as Trainee, Coulder & Pooser Plumbing and Heating Company as serviceman, Buddy Melfi Plumbing and Heating-later to become Buddy Melfi & Sons, Dorchester County Building Inspector, Manager of Sangaree Public Service District, Charleston Naval Shipyard- Pipefitter, Base Security for Kings Bay, Ga. Accomplishments: Summerville Volunteer Fire Department Secretary, 1947, and lifetime volunteer and photographer, Knights of Columbus 1947 (lifetime member), Chamber of Commerce 1959-1963, Lions Club President & Vice President, 1963, Greater Charleston Area Master Plumber's Association President & Secretary, 1963, Chamber of Commerce, Vice President, 1965, National Association of Plumbing, Heating & Cooling, 1967, St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church Parish Council, 1968, attended Technical Education Center for AC, Refrigeration and Heating, 1970, Summerville Town Council, Alderman, Chairman of Public Building & Grounds and headed the way for public recreation facilities and offered bills to create Parks and Playgrounds Commission, 1971 for 10 years. National Association of Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors, 1973, The State of South Carolina Environmental Systems Operator, 1974-1976, listed in the Who's Who in South Carolina, 1974, Certified in South Carolina Waste Water Treatment at Clemson University, 1975, successful in Safe Drinking Water Act, 1978. Letter received from The Town of Summerville in 1986, stated the following: "To Whom It May Concern: Until about a year ago, Mr. Buddy Melfi was actively engaged in the plumbing business since 1954. In my opinion, his reputation and knowledge of the plumbing trade is truly exceptional. As a citizen of the Town of Summerville, he served as a member of Town Council for many years, without pay, and did an outstanding job. I know him to be honest and reputable. Sincerely, Berlin G. Myers, Mayor, and Gerald E. Blackwell, Town Engineer". He is survived by five sons, Alexander "Lex" M. Melfi, Jr. of Summerville, Michael A. Melfi of St. Marys, GA, Christopher J. Melfi, James "Jimmy" A. Melfi, and Marc S. Melfi (Pixi), all of Summerville; four daughters, Marie Annette Melfi Griebsch (Dr. Heinz-Jurgen) of Hanahan, SC, Mary Veronica Melfi Wilson, (Lee) of Pendelton, OR, Marilyn Theresa Melfi Sabo (Dean) of Tyron, NC and Dolores Cecilia Melfi Lundsford (Tom) of Catawba, NC; seven stepchildren; 35 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents; and his sisters and brothers, Jennette Melfi.Bunch, Joseph Francis Melfi, Jr., Getrude Cordella Melfi, and Leonard Francis Melfi; and his wife of 47 years, Dolores Marie Rinck Melfi.
