James Hayes Obituary

James Martin Hayes, Jr., M.D. of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Barbara Jean Evans Hayes, entered into eternal rest Thursday, March 12, 2020. On behalf of the family of Dr. James M. Hayes, Jr. please note the visitation and Funeral Mass for Dr. Hayes will be private in compliance with the current CDC restrictions. The Hayes' family feels the health and safety of Dr. Hayes' extended family and friends takes precedence above all. With all services being private, it is the intent of the Hayes family to help mitigate any negative impact on the health of the community. They feel this approach would be one shared by their father; as Dr. Hayes worked his entire career for the benefit of the health of his patients and the Charleston Community. The family encourages all to share condolences and view the recorded Funeral Mass when available by going to https://tributes.com/JamesHayes. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel Jim was born April 9, 1938 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late James Martin Hayes and Mary Pamela Frank Hayes. He graduated from Andrews High School in 1956 and graduated from The Citadel in 1960. Jim and Barbara were married June 9, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Georgetown, SC. Jim graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1964. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years, including a year in Vietnam as commanding officer of the 332nd General Medical Dispensary, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. Jim was board certified in Internal Medicine and practiced in Charleston for 35 years. Over these years, he was an active member in Charleston County Medical Society, Medical Society of South Carolina, South Carolina Medical Association, South Carolina Society of Internal Medicine, and was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians. He served on many boards and committees to improve healthcare in the Charleston community. As a former board member of the Medical Society of South Carolina and Roper Hospital, he played a pivotal role in the 1997 merger of St. Francis and Roper Hospitals. In 2005, Jim received the first annual Roper St. Francis Foundation Physician Champion Award for his leadership and devotion to patients and the Charleston medical community. As an active member of the medical community, he could not simply retire. He became involved as a volunteer physician and Board Chairman for Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic. He was an advocate for providing healthcare services to those in need. In 2019, The Citadel Board of Visitors awarded Dr. Hayes an Honorary Doctorate acknowledging his many decades of service to the community and The Citadel. The Doctorate was to be conferred at The Citadel Commencement this May. In addition to his contributions to the medical community, Jim was a family man, an avid outdoorsman, and a proud Citadel alumni. Dear Jimmy, Patti, Amy, Keith, Beth, Terry and families, Your father was a wonderful example of a committed Christian. As a physician he took care of us and a lot of our family and we were sad the day he retired. We will always remember him as a caring physician as well as a dedicated doctor. He is with the Lord now and with your Mother and is smiling again. May God bless each one of you as you face each day without him. And May God bless you and bring peace to your hearts.
With our love and prayers.

I met Dr. Hayes as a young nurse at Charleston VA where he was the Chief Medical Resident at the time. I was so scared of him as he always looked stern and didn't put up with any slacking-----I would dread to see him come make rounds and prayed that everything was alright with the patients and that I had covered all bases!! I always remembered him as I moved out of state with my husband and worked at many different hospitals!! So when we moved back to Charleston and Barrier Island Free Medical Clinic opened and I was a volunteer RN there, I met him again. Such a mellow loving teddy bear of a person. We had a few laughs and pleasant times at the clinic. I also enjoyed Barbara as we were DAR sisters. Going to miss him but very proud to have known him and been in his presence!!!

Jim and I met at Old Roper, the last year it operated with only the ER open. He was an intern, I was a young RN. Wanting to learn more about everything, he served more than usual the number of rotations there. I worked a 12 hour night duty. I observed and learned from him every shared experience. He was exceptional as a diagnostition and we became friends. We conspired to send as many unaffiliated patients to Julian Buxton who was in his first year of practice, as we ethically could.

Those two men influenced me and befriended me. They cared for my parents for many years. I am sure that Jim wouldn't mind sharing this space with Julian!

Jim'skill in cardiology gave my mother almost forty years longer than an early situation may have taken from her.

I am proud of my friendship with him, though it only was touching base on visits home when I left Charleston. I know each of you gave by accepting the time away from you his patient's needed. I only knew Barbara casually. And last saw them at visitation for Mama at Stuhrs in 2006

Jim was my mentor, my example to try to follow, my friend and the epitome of what we should aspire to be. I couldn't recite all of his numerous accolades, but experienced some of them in his leadership of Roper Saint Francis and seeing some of his patients he allowed me to share. Most of the good things that happened at Roper Saint Francis in the beginning would not have happened except for him. A great man who will be missed by many.

I only knew Dr. Hayes personally for a little over one year. I knew him prior to that time by reputation. And, that reputation was well known and tremendously respected by numerous people that had been blessed by his impact on their individual lives. Dr. Hayes was an extremely hard and dedicated leader in every aspect of our community in which he was involved.

I greatly enjoyed his awareness of those less fortunate than ourselves and his willingness to always seek solutions. I will miss him greatly. My deepest condolences and prayers are extended to his family.

Jim Hayes was a wonderful person & physician. I worked with him at Charleston
County Hospital back in the day when he was chief resident. I was so impressed with his ability & knowledge that I said to myself that he was going to be my doctor one day. When he finished his residency I made sure to establish myself as one of his patients. He & Barbara were at my wedding. After my husband and I married Jim and my husband became very friendly. He was also my mother's physician. She was 89 1/2 when she passed. I credited him with keeping her stable & her long life. I will miss him & his hearty laugh. He is now heaven's physician!!

I only relatively recently met Dr. Hayes, but had the opportunity to have a rich conversation with him about our love for The Citadel and for being grandfathers. I knew right away that he was a man whom I would have been fortunate to have known much longer. Janis and I extend our condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Hayes.

During the time that Jim was so heavily involved in our medical world as fellow internist and leader, he was a beacon of light. Through all the changes that we experienced he maintained a touch of class. He had a way of communicating that really is unparalleled. Charleston is the better for his life here. Thank you, Jim. We will miss you.

We were plebes together in M Co. at The Citadel. A great memory! We played basket ball on our Co team with Jim making jump shots and the rest of us hustling to keep up. We did quite well.
Being from NY Jim made sure I kept grounded in the Southern traditions!

Dear Hayes Family,

In 1978, I came to Charleston as a house-staff officer in medicine at MUSC. During my training, and as chief resident, I worked with Dr Hayes at 2 John England at the old St Francis Hospital. I looked at Dr Hayes at that time, and over the years that I have been on the faculty at MUSC, as a role model and a great and humane physician. I was able to work at our VA hospital both in my training and over the past 41 years, having retired from the VA in 2009 as Chief of Primary Care, and now as a volunteer. Jim and I talked over the years about his serving and both of us caring for veterans, something we both take pride in.

I am now a Professor of Medicine in my 39th year on the MUSC faculty and remain grateful for knowing and working with Dr Hayes. All families sacrifice for the great accomplishments of their family members. I salute your family for allowing us to benefit from the greatness of Jim Hayes.
