As John's senior year roommate, I was surprised to hear of his passing. He was a "Southern Gentleman". Always personable and polite. My wife and I saw him and his wife in the late 90's. Lost track from then until saw in the Choate News that had moved to Charleston. God Bless.

Alfred and I were shocked and saddened to learn of John's death. He was absolutely delightful and lots of fun. He was proud of his Southern heritage and ties to Charleston - and we were proud to know him. Kindly accept our deepest sympathy to his family.

RIP John. Twas a few years ago we spent time together at Choate, my class being a year before yours. Although I was born not far from the Canadien border, I've always been very fond of the South, and would like to have known more of your family and your contributions to Charleston. God bless you and keep you.

I enjoyed meeting and getting to know John in his final years. He was a gentleman and a scholar. And I really appreciated that he taught me how to pronounce his last name. He will be missed.

I enjoyed meeting and getting to know John in his final years. He was a gentleman and a scholar. And I appreciated him explaining to me the correct way to pronounce his last name.

I am distressed to hear about John's death. I enjoyed knowing him not only at Choate but when he moved to Charleston. A great guy. I'll always remember when he wore his Choate letter jacket for junior varsity sports...he said that the inscription, which was a small JV inside of a large block C, annotated his initials JV for John Vander Horst and not for Junior Varsity. In my mind, he was always Varsity in life!
