Banks Bernard Funderburk, Jr. "Skip" CHARLOTTE - Banks "Skip" Bernard Funderburk, Jr., 54, passed away April 22, 2015, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family after a brief battle with tonsil cancer. Skip was born on October 3, 1960 to Bernard and Carolyn Funderburk. He is preceded in death by his father; Banks Bernard Funderburk, Sr.; sister, Mary Teresa "Terry" Funderburk, maternal grandparents, Marvin and Rose Mann and fraternal grandparents, Banks and Mary Funderburk. As a young man/teen, Skip played and coached baseball and basketball at various Catholic parishes around Charlotte. Skip was an avid sports fan. He loved all UNC Tarheel sports, Atlanta Braves baseball and Atlanta Falcons football. Also an avid music lover, Skip was a huge Cheap Trick and Bruce Springsteen fan. After graduating from Sun Valley High School in 1980, Skip began his career at BC&H working in shipping and receiving. He also worked part-time at the old Charlotte Coliseum as an usher for 18 years. Skip's most recent job was as a Warehouse Manager at Fluid Flow Products, Inc. Left to treasure his memory are his wife, Mary; step-daughter, Stephanie Long (Sopheak) of Greensboro, NC; mother; Carolyn Funderburk of Stallings, NC; brother, Larry Funderburk of Stallings, NC; sisters; Lori Sapp (Bobby) of Lancaster, SC and Lisa Tompa (Rick) of Waxhaw, NC, nephews Tyler and Banks Tompa, and the anticipated arrival of his first granddaughter, Saley Long, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Skip was loved by many and will be missed by all. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Alfred Newman and his staff. Special thanks to Dr. Bobby Silver, Dr. Steven Plunkett, and Dr. Peter Copsis. There will be a private burial prior to the memorial service. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, April 25, 2015, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church at 3016 Providence Road. Visitation for family and friends will be from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Heritage Funeral Home at 3700 Forest Lawn Drive in Matthews, NC.
