Janet Hitchner Obituary

Mrs. Janet Catherine Hurley Kopsch Hitchner, 72, passed away Saturday February 17, 2018 in her home with loving family at hand. Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Barry Hitchner, of Charlotte, North Carolina, her brother, Dale, and their parents, Donald and Joan Hurley, of Detroit, Michigan. She will live on forever in the hearts and memories of her sons, Brian Gregory and David Kopsch, her daughters-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Fitts and Nieves Sanchez Perez, her grandchildren, David, Carmen, and Vivian Kopsch-Sanchez, and her extended family and friends across the United States and Europe.

A graduate of the Universities of Michigan and Northern Iowa, Janet applied her Master's degree, talent, and experience to helping people communicate. An accomplished speech and language pathologist, she collaborated with other teachers and therapists to develop individual learning plans and communication devices specific to students' physical or developmental disabilities. She helped establish a donation fund for students with disabilities in Charlotte's Metro School and volunteered her time and charisma to numerous charity efforts.

Janet lived in five different states prior to embracing North Carolina as her home. She delighted in travel and visited places as diverse as the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, and the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan, New York. Always caring and indulgent, Janet gave her husband, sons, and grandchildren opportunities to succeed, created spaces that made lifetime memories, and provided unfailing support.

Visitation and a funeral Mass will be held March 9, 2018 in the Daily Mass Chapel at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in South Charlotte. Visitation will begin at 12:30PM, followed by a funeral Mass at 1PM and internment at Sharon Memorial Park, where she will dream with her husband throughout eternity.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Metro School, Hospice & Palliative Care of the Charlotte Region, or the Kidney Foundation of North Carolina.

Memories and Condolences
for Janet Hitchner

Not sure what to say?

I worked with Jan on the assistive technology team for about 9 years. She cared very much for the students she worked with and was an advocate for the students at Metro. I ran into her recently and she spoke of her children and grandchildren and how much she loved and enjoyed them. Praying that God gives you comfort and peace during this time.

I knew Jan for many years. She was always kind and caring. As a fellow SLP, I called on her to provide special expertise when I had a challenging assistive technology need. Jan was always ready to help. May she rest in peace and may her family find solace in the knowledge that she was seen by one and all as a wonderful human being. She will be missed.

Janet and I worked together for three years at the UCP Center in Charlotte. She was an extremely dedicated speech therapist and a mentor to me as a new Director of the center. One of our fun activities was planning field trips for the children. The attached photo is at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1980 or 1981. I am sorry for her loss!
