Thomas Ernest Cummings(1941 - 2018)

Thomas Ernest Cummings, age 77, died unexpectedly at Litchfield Beach, SC, on Monday May 28, 2018. He was born February 4, 1941, the third child of Mary Stockton and Kemp Plummer Battle Cummings in Winston-Salem, NC.

He attended public schools in Winston-Salem and was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School in 1959. He then attended the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill where he was a Morehead Scholar and a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduation in 1963 Tom attended UNC's School of Law. He graduated in 1966 and moved to Charlotte, NC with his wife Genevieve and daughter Catherine.

In Tom's 40 years of legal practice he was a member of the Mecklenburg County Bar, the North Carolina Bar, the North Carolina Bar Association, and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

In Charlotte, Tom was an original board member of the Charlotte Area Fund, a member and Deacon at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, a member at The Charlotte Country Club, The RODS, his beloved golf group, The Piedmont Club, The Thursday Dance Club and various other organizations.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Genevieve Steele Cummings, his beloved children, Catherine Dubose and her husband David DuBose, of Greenville, SC and Thomas E. Cummings, Jr. of Piedmont, CA, his wonderful grandson David DuBose IV of Greenville, SC, and his brother Kemp Cummings of Pinehurst, NC. Also included are his three sisters-in-law and their husbands and his brother-in-law and his wife, whom he cherished, Betsy S. Carr and her husband Watts of Greensboro, NC, Anne S. Page and her husband Dan of Charlotte, NC, Susan S. Barber and her husband Freeman of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Flake F. Steele III and his wife Lu Ann of Clemmons, NC. Also included are many special nieces and nephews.

Tom was predeceased in life by his parents and his sister Billie Goslen of Winston-Salem, NC.

A memorial service to celebrate and honor Tom's life will be held on Sunday, June 3 at 2:00 PM in the sanctuary at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, led by the Reverend Joe Cliffard. A reception will immediately follow in Oxford Hall.
