Samuel Edward Penegar

1933 - 2018

Samuel Edward Penegar, 84 of Salisbury and Atlantic Beach passed away Wednesday (February 14, 2018) at the North Carolina State Veterans Home.

Born April 27, 1933 in Monroe, he was the son of the late James Postelle Penegar and Mary Bright Secrest Penegar.

Mr. Penegar graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill in June of 1956 with a B.S. in Business Administration.

After graduation he was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy, then ordered to Athens, GA for Navy Supply School in July of 1956. He was ordered in November for the USS Orion AS-18. His remaining active duty was aboard the USS Wallace L. Lind DD-703. Afterwards he joined the Navy Reserve and retired from the Navy with the rank of Lt. Commander.

He moved to Salisbury in 1960 employed by Scottish Bank. In the late 1960's he opened the first full service brokerage for Interstate Securities. He was Vice President there until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Penegar was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury. He was an active member of the Jaycee's and the Country Club of Salisbury as well as the Morehead City Country Club. Mr. Penegar was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Morehead City. He worked as a volunteer with the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Worth Penegar; and sister, Mary Frances Bottorf.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Ann Dixson Penegar; sons, Samuel Edward Penegar, Jr. and wife Cindy Belk Penegar, formerly of Salisbury, NC, James Jackson Penegar and wife Beth Shaw Penegar of Charlotte, NC and Scott Dixson Penegar and wife Kaye Felkel Penegar of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren, Samuel Edward Penegar, III and wife Kathryn Lee Penegar of Wilmington, NC, Michael Brandon Penegar and wife Lisa Vernon Penegar of Denver, NC, Madison Elizabeth Penegar and Conner James Penegar of Charlotte, NC, Oliver Dixson Penegar and Anna Keller Penegar of Charleston, SC; two great-grandsons, Samuel Edward Penegar, IV and Bentlee Michael Penegar; sister, Margaret Lee Furr of Monroe. He is also remember by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday (Feb. 21) at the US National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC with the Rev. Dr. Mark Conforti, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Salisbury. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by the US Navy and the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.

Following the service the family will receive friends at the Club House at the Crescent, 220 Laurel Valley Way, Salisbury, NC
