Barbara Shelton Basinger McLendon passed away Friday, January 11, 2019. She was the wife of the late Hubert Jackson McLendon, Sr. and a daughter of the late James Andrew Basinger, Sr. and Jessica Shelton Basinger. Born in Charlotte, NC, Barbara graduated from Central High School and attended Queen's College.

Barbara was a longstanding member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a cheerful volunteer in the weekly Soup Kitchen ministry, where she was named Volunteer of the Year. Her ready smile, infectious laugh, and engaging personality touched all whom she met and befriended throughout her life. She delighted in the wonders of nature, joyfully immersing herself in the beauty of morning sunrises, evening sunsets, and starlit moon-filled nights. Barbara possessed a life long passion for animals and birds and marveled in all the workings of God's creation. She was an avid walker and creative writer, penning numerous poems and humorous short stories throughout her life.

Barbara is survived by her four children, Lucinda Jones and her husband, Johnny, Dr. Shelton Hisley and her husband, Dr. John, Hubert McLendon, Jr., and James McLendon and his wife, Maria; brother, James A. Basinger, Jr. and his wife, Betty; two grandchildren, Laurel Hanna and Roscoe McLendon; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah Varney and Larken Hanna. She was preceded in death by her sister Martha B. Bookout Boyd.

A celebration of the life of Barbara Shelton Basinger McLendon will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, followed by a reception at the church. A private graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery.
