Betty Anita Hanks Stanley passed away peacefully on July 8, 2018 following a long, brave battle with dementia and after complications from a fall. She was 87 years old.

Betty was born in 1931 to Dorothy Hutsell and Carlos Hanks in Athens, Tennessee. While attending The American Business and Commerce Institute, she met the love of her life, Jim Stanley, whom she married in the fall of 1957. The family grew over the next few years with the addition of beloved daughters, Julia and Stephanie.

In 1963, the family moved to Charlotte, NC where Betty worked as a kindergarten teacher, attended nursing school and was a homemaker. She had a beautiful flare for home decorating and was a very talented seamstress, making both of her daughters' bridesmaids dresses for their weddings. Betty and Jim loved the NC Blue Ridge Mountains, so upon retirement they moved to Brevard, NC. There Betty helped with the care of her mother, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed the beauty of mountain living. She was always inspired by life's little gifts, her grandchildren's laughter, the sports of golf and bowling, a good glass of wine and the family game of gin rummy.

After Jim's passing, Betty moved back to Charlotte, NC to be near her daughters. Although she suffered from dementia in her final years, Betty was always ready to share in laughter, enjoy a good meal and spend time with her family. She always felt the love that was present wherever she went. The world is a lesser place for her passing, but we are beyond grateful for having had Betty Anita Hanks Stanley in our lives.

Betty is survived by beloved daughters, Julia Greenfield and Stephanie Funderburk; grandchildren, Abby and Jonathan Greenfield; son-in-law, Russell Greenfield; sister, Joan Snyder; nieces, Laura Goodwin and Angie Hoskins.

If so moved, donations in Betty's honor may be made to The .
