Mrs. Dorothy Smith Goins died at her home in Sharon Towers at age 102 on May 15, 2018. Dorothy was born December 25, 1915 in Cleveland County to the late James B. Smith and Carrie Stroup Smith.

Mrs. Goins was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Goins, Sr.; sister, Ruth Smith; brother, Carlyle Smith; and grandchildren, Katie and Robert Goins. She is survived by two sons, Herb Goins and wife Lindsay of High Point and Dr. Robert Goins and wife Kathy of Hickory; six grandchildren: Lee Goins (Suzanne), John Goins (Emily), Sarah Creed (Barry), Jeff Goins (Dee), Alex Goins (Jean), Andrew Goins (Kimberly); and ten great-grandchildren.

After graduating from Mars Hill Junior College and Woman's College (now UNC-G), she began a teaching career in Pittsboro where she met her future husband Herbert, a teacher and coach. In 1947 they moved to Charlotte where she continued her teaching career at Villa Heights Elementary and Myers Park Elementary, retiring after 39 years of service.

During her lifetime, Mrs. Goins was a member of the Charlotte Classroom Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and St. Mark's Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, youth advisor, altar guild chairman, hand bell choir member and volunteer coordinator for church receptionists. Dorothy was an avid bridge player and heartily enjoyed cheering for her sons and grandchildren at sporting events.

A private graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, Saturday, May 19, officiated by Pastor Michael Frye.
