He attended Welcome Middle School, North Davidson High School and Wake Forest College (now University). After graduating from Wake Forest in 1960, he began his accounting career with Peat Marwick Mitchell. In September 1961 he entered military service and was honorably discharged in September 1963, having reached the rank of Specialist Fourth Class in the Officers Pay Section. At that point, Fritts returned to Peat Marwick Mitchell, where he worked until June 1980, when he left to become the tax director at J. A. Jones Construction Company. In July 1981 Fritts started a private CPA practice, which he maintained until 2017.

Fritts earned his CPA Certificate in June 1964 and was a member of the NC Association of CPAs and American Institute of CPAs. An avid supporter of Wake Forest University Athletics, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, serving on the Theta Tau Alumni Association as president, secretary or treasurer from 2004 until 2017. Fritts also completed terms as treasurer and chairperson of the House of Mercy Board of Directors.

I miss Fritts so very much he was like my brother to me even tho he was my first cousin. We talked on the telephone every night we grew up together as we only lived a few hundred feet apart when we were growing up.. We were very close and he is missed by so many people. It does not seem that it can be a year now that he has been gone. Fritts was kind generous person to so many people. He was a man of his word and well respected. John, I am so sorry for the lost of Fritts and it breaks my heart that his is gone and I keep you in my prayers daily.

John,
I am just seeing this and heartbroken that Fritts has passed. He was my favorite customer at the shop and has been comming since I was 3 years old. He use to tip me a dollar and I was three. It made my whole day. I remember always asking when he was visiting and he was so wonderful to my entire family. My parents thought the world of him. Hugs to you and please visit us to share your stories about the antique cars that my Dad and you both collect.
