Leta Kendall Hawn Swartz MINT HILL - Leta Kendall Hawn Swartz, age 77, of Mint Hill, NC passed away on July 18th, 2016. She was born in Charlotte, NC on May 28, 1939 and graduated from Myers Park High School and then earned a bachelor's degree in Education from Lenoir-Rhyne University. She was preceded in death by her mother, Elizabeth Self Kendall, her father, Woodrow Wilson Kendall, and her husband, Rev. John Martin Hawn. She is survived by her husband, Harold H. Swartz, her son Mark Hawn and his wife Sally, their children Sam and Elizabeth, her son Brian Hawn and his wife Heather, and her brother Don Kendall and wife Ginny. Leta worked as an elementary school teacher in Albemarle, NC and Roanoke, VA and had a passion for teaching children. In her youth, she was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Charlotte. Later in life, she was a member of First Lutheran Church in Albemarle, NC for over 20 years and has been an active member for the last 10 years at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Matthews, NC. In 2004, she received the North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service for Stanly County. After years of teaching, she organized an after school tutoring program and a summer camp for ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Leta was an avid artist and enjoyed watercolor painting and attending workshops. Leta and her husband Harold were also weekly volunteers for the local soup kitchen at Ascension Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC. Leta was an active volunteer with The Charity League of Charlotte, which focuses on giving to impoverished children in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. A special thanks to her loving husband Harold, who has been a true angel from God, a loving nourishing caregiver, and the true light of her life. Funeral arrangements will be held at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Matthews, NC on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Funeral will be followed immediately by a reception at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Leta's favorite charity, via check, payable to Charity League, Inc., PO Box 471332, Charlotte, NC 28247-1332.
