Mr. William Howard Pitt, Jr passed away at Southminster Retirement Community Wednesday, June 29, 2016. He was the son of William Howard Pitt and Susie Francis White Pitt and was born in Norfolk, Virginia on September 21, 1931.

He graduated from Perquimans County High School in Hertford, North Carolina in 1949 and Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1950. In 1954 he graduated from Duke University. While at Duke University he captained the 1953-1954 football team. His senior year he was selected to the All-American team for exceptional playing. He served his country as a captain in the United States Marine Corps and upon returning from the reserves as a Major.

He moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1956 to join James J. Harris Insurance Agency in 1956 and later was a founding principle in the Lambeth-Pitt-Crump insurance agency where he served as President until it was acquired by Sedgwick of the Carolinas. He worked up until his last day at the Lowry Insurance Agency. He was a past vestry memember of St. John's Episcopal Church and a founding trustee of Charlotte Latin School. He was inducted into the inaugural class of the Charlotte Latin School Sports Hall of Fame in September of 2014.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anna Redding Pitt. He is survived by his children, Susan Pitt Herring, Mariah Pitt Waltemyer and her husband Mike, Mary Howard Lassiter and her husband Jack and William Howard Pitt, III. He is survived by six grandchildren Patrick Merritt Herring IV and wife Leah, Susanne Ingram Herring, Stuart Pitt Cochrane, William Howard Pitt IV, Anna Hollis Wycliff Pitt and Ingram Dryman Pitt. He is survived by his great-granddaughter Evelyn Rose Herring. He is also survived by his brother-in-law William Howard Redding, Jr and wife Camille.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be in the Parish Hall immediately following the service.

The family would especially like to thank Hazel Chisholm, Anetra Chisholm, Keisha Chisholm and Aly Dante for the love and care that they bestowed upon our Father for two years. They are angels on earth and loved greatly by our Father and the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Charlotte Latin School, 9502 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28277 or St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.

As a Duke football teamate of Howard's....and also a fraternity brother and fellow Marine, I can attest to the fact that Howie was the best of the best in everthing he did and very humble about all his accomplishments . A truly great person and friend who will be very much missed,
