Melvin Rosenfeld Obituary

Melvin A. Rosenfeld died on August 19, 2012, at his home in Hoffman Estates, IL. He was born in Chicago on December 26, 1918. He is survived by his son and daughter, David G. Rosenfeld and Ellen Rosenfeld Grove; his grandsons, Andy Wells, Alex Wells, and David Odey; his brother, William Rosenfeld; and his dear friend, Jean Nelson. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eleanor. Mel graduated from the University of Chicago in 1940 with a BS in Geology, where he was a teaching assistant until 1942. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and flew many missions in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. In 1946, he married Eleanor Johnson (also from Chicago). After obtaining a PhD in Geology and Statistics at Penn State University in 1953, he worked in senior research and management positions in geology, statistics, and computers until he retired in 1980. During their marriage, he and Eleanor lived in almost every region of the country before settling in Hendersonville, NC, where Eleanor died in 2002. Mel then returned to the Chicago area, moving to the Devonshire in Hoffman Estates. He took a leadership role in the community and formed a loving relationship with Jean Nelson. By the grace of God, he remained physically and mentally healthy until passing away from a brief acute illness in his own home. A military service was held on September 30, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL.

Dear Dad,

I miss you so much and I am very greatful that Ellen, Alex, Andy, and I spent lots of time with you during your last few weeks. The military service was beautiful and moving. You are now in heaven with Mother and that is wonderful. You were a fantastic father and you loved us and taught us a lot about life. I am so glad you met Jean because you two made life wonderful for each other. I love you, David.
