My sincere condolences to the Totten family. I came to know Mr. and Mrs. Totten as parents to my dear friend Diane, their daughter. I have fond memories of attending the yearly republican picnics as a teenager. After having my own family Mr. Totten impressed upon me the importance of actively participating in our election process through ROOST while we lived in EGV.
He was a principled and persuasive man and I am happy to have known both Mr. and Mrs. Totten.
I pray they are at peace together again.

My condolences to the family of Donald Totten. We shared many wine and cheese get- togethers as we were close neighbors. We will miss him as we did wife, Joyce.

I will never forget Don's patience with an inexperienced young elected official. He was a kind and gifted mentor.

My sincerest condolences to Don Tottens' family.
Don was an adviser, counselor, mentor and base for my run for President/Mayor of Schaumburg, run and election as a Schaumburg Township Trustee, President of the Township Trustees Division of Cook County, Director of the Township Officials of Illinois, run for Treasurer of Cook County & run for and election as a Trustee of the Schaumburg Township District Library. I am appreciative of the guidance Don gave me during the aforementioned campaigns. Don was a true conservative Republican and a Statesman we can all be proud of knowing.

I was acquainted with Don during my time as a Paige in the Illinois House and being a state officer in Teen-Age Republicans. But when I was a 17 year-old Freshman in college he asked me to head the Reagan Campaign on Illinois College Campuses. It began my involvement with the future President that led to my running the delegates campaign in 1980's Illinois Primary and running the downstate office in Springfield. He brought me out to be the Deputy ED for the Fall campaign even though it was my first year of law school. I was honored to be able to assist Don when he ran for Lt. Governor but it was also my final year of law school and I was employed by the Attorney General at the time. When I was 17 years old and working for him, his gruffness scared me. But by the time I worked for him a second time I knew it concealed a warm-heart. My career--and much of my life, was changed by Don Totten.

While working for W.Clement Stone in the early 80's I met Don Totten. President Reagan was in the White House. I volunteered to help Don and ROOST in Schaumburg even though I lived in Barrington. It wasn't long before I was running for Barrington Township Committeeman where I served along side Don for 8 years. Don got me introduced to local politics. The snake bit and later was elected Village Trustee as well as Township Trustee.
I owe Don a debt of gratitude for allowing me to see first-hand just exactly how the game of politics was played in Illinois at the local, state and national level. The reason this matters is that by background I obtained a Ph.D. and taught American Politics many times before I met Don. But his window to the world enabled me to move from theory to praxis in the classroom which for me was immensely fulfilling intellectually & academically (class discussion became significantly more relevant).
And, later in my professional life I was able to take some of those acquired skills into the wonky world of public policy and make a difference. So, in no small way Don helped shape some of the more efficacious moments of my adult working life.
Rest in peace, Don.

Don was a political mentor and probably the last hard working, respected and successful Republican leaders in Cook County. He was a prime example of what can be accomplished through hard work and strategic political activity.
He expected much of his fellow Republican leaders. He asked for loyalty to the Cause not to himself. I was privileged to work with him and to have him as a friend.

Our family grew up across the street from the Tottens & I was friends with his daughter Kathy. I will always remember attending The Republican Picnics & all the hoopla in the neighborhood when the Tottens threw Political Partys at their home. My deepest sympathies go out the Diane, Rob, Kathy & Dons family.
May Gods Grace carry you all through this difficult time.

I was a player on Don's little league baseball team (the Mets), with his son, Rob. I have fond memories of Don as a kind and excellent coach with a good sense of humor, who not only knew how to get the best out of his players, but took a genuine interest in each player's growth and development and we won the "World Series!" My thoughts are with Rob and the rest of the extended family.
