Candice Kane Obituary

Candice Marie (Candy) Kane, 68, of Springfield, passed away at 4:44 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017 at her home. Candice was born August 6, 1948 in Mamaroneck, NY, the daughter of Gregory and Velma Marie Sammarco Kane. She married Carol Corgan on May 8, 2014 at Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. Candice obtained her bachelor's degree from Wheaton, a women's college in Connecticut, attended Northwestern University, where she earned her Ph.D. in Psychology, and later obtained her Juris Doctorate from Northern Illinois University. She worked as the executive director of the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority until 2004, and retired in 2014 from University of Illinois at Chicago, Cure Violence, where she was C.O.O. Her career was devoted to social justice and ending violence. She loved work and her family of colleagues. Everywhere she went, Candice showed up with food, flowers, conversation and laughter. Candice adored her cat (KC), travel, theatre, dance, her flower garden, and making a meal for family and friends - always too much and just right. Candice was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Greg Kane. She is survived by her spouse, Carol Corgan of Springfield and her cousin, David "Skip" Sammarco of White Plaines, NY, who was a favorite childhood friend. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Remembrance: 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Inn at 835, 835 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, IL 62703. A gathering will follow until 5:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, 300 N. I was sad to hear that Candice is gone, but nothing will diminish my memory of every conversation we ever shared. She took her work and her life's mission very seriously, but was always ready to share a moment of sarcasm. My favorite kind of friend and colleague.

Candice was a wonderful person who taught me so much. She was generous with her wealth of knowledge, and in every way. She was a pleasure to work with, and a great role model. My prayers for the family in this time of loss.
