Smith Sr., Gerald H. "Gerry" Gerald H. Smith, Sr. was born on March 30, 1947 in Gary, Indiana to Earl Sr. and Robbie Smith. Gerald confessed Christ at an early age and later became a member of St. Timothy Community Church. Gerald graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in the Class of 1965. He lettered in varsity Track & Field and Football. He was a member of Roosevelt's 1964 State Track & Field championship team that was recently inducted into the Hall of Fame for Indiana Track & Field. He received an athletic scholarship and graduated from Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. After working ten years at Amoco Oil, Gerald was employed with the Gary Community School Corporation as a Special Education teacher at West Side High School until his retirement in June 2013. Many staff and students remember his commitment to academics and extracurricular activities. He was united in holy matrimony to Melvina Pinn in 1969. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Sr. and Robbie; and his brother, Robert "Bobby" Smith. Gerald made a peaceful transition into eternal life on Sunday, July 6, 2014. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, devoted wife, Melvina; children, Tamara Taylor, Gerald Jr., and Jamie Smith; brother, Earl (Roberta) Smith, Jr.; sisters, Earline (Louis) Rogers and Denice (Robert) Jackson; sister-in-law, Louise Smith; and mother-in-law, Katherine White. Gerald will be remembered by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Throughout his illness, Gerald was supported by his loyal friends, Archie Ferguson and Harold White. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 11, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family hour from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Both services will be held at St. Timothy Community Church.
