Joan Carroll Hanson Obituary
"It's all right, I've had a good life . . . a very good life" she said. "I'm 84 years old." And with that, Joan gave doctors treating her pneumonia two weeks to cure her or remove the breathing tube. No CPR, no portable oxygen tanks, no tracheotomy, no other invasive treatment, she insisted. Joan was always pragmatic. But, modern medicine was not up to her challenge. Joan died on September 9. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison (1954), she had several working careers: newspaper reporter (Michigan's Flint Journal and Bay City Times) and in diverse fields such as banking, lingerie, and travel. She taught her children, Eric and Ellen, to be independent, resourceful, and responsible. Joan helped her husband of 62 years, Wally, with his career and mentored him to be passably domestically independent. Her husband, children and grandchildren: Megan and Dylan Hanson, Anna and Madi Gaebler, will carry her pragmatism, critical thinking, love, humor, and memory throughout their lives.
