Anne Eskra Obituary
Anne M. Eskra nee Murray, age 72, formerly of Winnetka and Evanston, died in Denver, CO, on December 27 with family at her bedside. Anne's peaceful and natural death came as a result of a stroke on the 21st. Anne graduated New Trier H.S. in 1963, received her B.A. in English & Psychology from Wellesley College, and earned her M.A. in English from the University of Chicago. This passion for written language informed her work as a teacher in the Peace Corps in Kenya. She led a 38-year-long career as an editor of educational textbooks, most notably at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The call of this work was so strong that she returned to it (following her retirement and move to Denver in 2012), alongside many colleagues she knew for decades. Anne's passions were too many and too nuanced to list in total, but included coffee ice cream, relishing in long conversation, gardening/botany, exploration of myriad spiritual paths (with a particularly deep connection to Kabbalistic healing), appreciation of art in its many forms, and travel to and alongside those beloved to her. Anne is preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth "Betty" (Ely) Murray and Rowland "Bud" Murray. Anne is survived by her brother A. Gordon Murray and nephews Ethan and Aidan; former husband Dale Eskra; daughter Catherine "Katie" Eskra; daughter Laurel (Eskra) Tropeano and her husband Jeff, and granddaughters Vivian and Sylvie (amongst many other beloved cousins and family members). A celebration of Anne's life will be held at Alice Millar Chapel (1870 Sheridan Rd. in Evanston) at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, with reception to follow. Donations can be made to the Denver Botanic Gardens "in memory of Anne Eskra."
